DST Beginner Guide

A first-week plan for Don't Starve Together: how the loop works, what to do in session one, and the mistakes that waste the most time.

What DST actually is

Don't Starve Together is Klei's co-op survival game. Hunger, sanity, and seasons will kill you more than monsters if you do not set up a camp before the first winter. The loop you will repeat: Explore, gather, build a base, survive seasons, then optionally fight bosses when the team has armor and a plan.

Your first session

Pick a beginner-friendly character (Wilson, Willow, or Wolfgang) before Wes. Find a biome mix: food, twigs, flint, and a place that is not a swamp. Crock pot and farms beat berries forever. Learn a few recipes. Make a torch and a fire before night. The darkness is not a joke.

Mistakes that end runs

Fighting a treeguard or deerclops with a spear and hope. Base in the middle of a spider nest 'because it is funny'. Ignoring winter clothing until the snow is already on the ground. Kiting every fight like a speedrunner on your first live.

What 'good' looks like after a week

You should be able to explain Don't Starve Together's core loop in one sentence, recover from a bad session without rage-reinstalling, and know which mode or map is for learning versus for ego. If you are still lost, re-read the first-session steps instead of hopping to a random viral build.
