Elden Ring Beginner Guide
A first-week plan for ELDEN RING: how the loop works, what to do in session one, and the mistakes that waste the most time.
What Elden Ring actually is
Elden Ring is FromSoftware's open-world action RPG. You can cheese, summon, or git gud — but most walls are a missing weapon upgrade, a skipped dungeon, or a fight you took at the wrong time. The loop you will repeat: Explore a region, grab Sites of Grace, upgrade the weapon you like, then retry the shardbearer when the fight is readable.
Your first session
Pick a class for the weapon fantasy, not a min-max sheet. Vagabond and Samurai are honest. Level Vigor. This is not optional for a first playthrough. Explore south Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula before you stubborn-headbutt Stormveil for three hours. Use Spirit Ashes if you want. They are in the game on purpose.
Mistakes that end runs
Never upgrading the weapon. Smithing stones are the damage stat. Fat rolling because you wanted the cool armor. Equip load is a mechanic. Ignoring Torrent's double jump and map fragments. The world is the tutorial. Summoning a helper then standing still. Co-op still needs you to play.
What 'good' looks like after a week
You should be able to explain ELDEN RING's core loop in one sentence, recover from a bad session without rage-reinstalling, and know which mode or map is for learning versus for ego. If you are still lost, re-read the first-session steps instead of hopping to a random viral build.
