FM26 Beginner Guide

A first-week plan for Football Manager 26: how the loop works, what to do in session one, and the mistakes that waste the most time.

What FM26 actually is

Football Manager 26 is SI's club simulation: you hire, train, and tactically shape a squad. Matches are the exam; the rest of the save is scouting, morale, and not selling your only creative midfielder in January. The loop you will repeat: Set a tactic your players can actually do, train it, scout replacements, then manage the match without changing formation every 10 minutes.

Your first session

Start unemployed or with a club whose expectations you can read. Managing a giant on day one hides whether you understand the match engine. Pick a familiar shape (4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3) and roles that match attributes, not a viral wonder-tactic from three patches ago. Set training and rest. Fatigued pressers concede in minute 80. Scout your own squad before the transfer window. You already have a left back; you just never looked.

Mistakes that end runs

Buying wonderkids with no work permits or no playing time. They rot in the U21s and hate you. Changing tactics after one bad bounce. Give a shape 8–10 games unless the locker room is on fire. Ignoring player roles vs individual instructions. They stack into nonsense. Simming every match while the tactic is unproven. Watch a few, then sim.

What 'good' looks like after a week

You should be able to explain Football Manager 26's core loop in one sentence, recover from a bad session without rage-reinstalling, and know which mode or map is for learning versus for ego. If you are still lost, re-read the first-session steps instead of hopping to a random viral build.
