HOI4 Beginner Guide
A first-week plan for Hearts of Iron IV: how the loop works, what to do in session one, and the mistakes that waste the most time.
What HOI4 actually is
Hearts of Iron IV is Paradox's WWII grand strategy game. You manage industry, research, and divisions, then unpause history — or rewrite it with a focus tree. The loop you will repeat: Build civs then mils, template a division that supplies, assign armies to a front, and fight when the logistics can take it.
Your first session
Play Germany, Italy, or the 1936 tutorial-ish majors on Recruit. Micro-nations can wait. Learn the production screen before fancy navy. Guns and trucks win land wars. Use the battle planner as a teacher, then micro the important attacks. Read supply maps. A beautiful encirclement that starves is a defeat.
Mistakes that end runs
20-width memes from a 2018 video. Templates change with DLC and patches; look at current combat width. Declaring on the world with no fuel. Tanks without fuel are sculptures. Ignoring air. Green air is a land buff. Unpausing for a year without looking at the logistics and construction tabs.
What 'good' looks like after a week
You should be able to explain Hearts of Iron IV's core loop in one sentence, recover from a bad session without rage-reinstalling, and know which mode or map is for learning versus for ego. If you are still lost, re-read the first-session steps instead of hopping to a random viral build.
