PoE 2 Beginner Guide
A first-week plan for Path of Exile 2: how the loop works, what to do in session one, and the mistakes that waste the most time.
What PoE 2 actually is
Path of Exile 2 is GGG's slower, more deliberate ARPG sequel. Combos, weapon sets, and boss telegraphs matter more than zoom-mapping on day one — the tree is still enormous. The loop you will repeat: Level a league or early-access character, learn boss patterns, cap defenses, then enter the endgame map/system of the current patch.
Your first session
Pick a class and a skill gem that the campaign actually supports. Swapping every zone is how you brick sockets. Dodge is a resource. Standing in telegraphs because 'PoE 1 trained me to facetank' is a wipe. Follow a current-patch written guide if the tree intimidates you. Inventing is for character two. Vendor and loot filter still matter. The ground will lie.
Mistakes that end runs
Ignoring spirit, weapon swap, or the new defensive layers until a campaign boss one-shots you. Spending currency like it is mapping day 3 of PoE 1. The economy is a different game. Skipping support gems that enable the skill. A 3-link with a plan beats a pretty unique you cannot use. Going into endgame maps with uncapped elemental-style defenses.
What 'good' looks like after a week
You should be able to explain Path of Exile 2's core loop in one sentence, recover from a bad session without rage-reinstalling, and know which mode or map is for learning versus for ego. If you are still lost, re-read the first-session steps instead of hopping to a random viral build.
