RimWorld Beginner Guide

A first-week plan for RimWorld: how the loop works, what to do in session one, and the mistakes that waste the most time.

What RimWorld actually is

RimWorld is a story-generator colony sim. You draft pawns, build a base, and survive Randy or a milder storyteller. The fun is the disaster you caused with a poorly placed battery. The loop you will repeat: Land, shelter, grow food, research, then fight raids with a killbox or a principle — until a fire, a heart attack, or a thrumbos.

Your first session

Crashland on a temperate forest with Cassandra or Phoebe, not Ice Sheet Randy, for the first colony. Prioritize a freezer, beds, and a growing zone. Mood is a resource. Draft and practice a simple choke. Three unarmed pawns in a hallway still lose to a manhunting pack if you panic. Read the work tab. Doctors should not be hauling during surgery.

Mistakes that end runs

Wooden rooms around a wooden battery. Fire is the tutorial. Recruiting every raider until the colony is 18 moods in a 8-person fridge. Ignoring recreation and beauty. Mental breaks start 'stories'. Installing 200 mods before you survive one winter vanilla.

What 'good' looks like after a week

You should be able to explain RimWorld's core loop in one sentence, recover from a bad session without rage-reinstalling, and know which mode or map is for learning versus for ego. If you are still lost, re-read the first-session steps instead of hopping to a random viral build.
