Stardew Beginner Guide

A first-week plan for Stardew Valley: how the loop works, what to do in session one, and the mistakes that waste the most time.

What Stardew actually is

Stardew Valley is a farming and town sim where the clock is the antagonist. Crops, mines, relationships, and the Community Center can all wait — the day cannot. The loop you will repeat: Water crops, spend energy on mines or foraging, gift villagers, sleep, repeat through seasons.

Your first session

Plant parsnips, then a mix the first spring. Do not mine until 1am on day 2 with 10 energy. Build a chest next to the farm exit. Inventory management is a skill. Follow the Community Center bundles at a relaxed pace. Joja is a valid alternate if you hate bundles — it is a story choice. Fish when it rains if you like it. Skip it if you do not. The game allows both.

Mistakes that end runs

Passing out at 2am constantly. It is a gold and energy tax. Planting a crop that harvests after the season ends. Read the days-to-grow. Ignoring the TV (luck, weather, recipes). It is free information. Gifting disliked items because they were in your pocket. The wiki list is allowed.

What 'good' looks like after a week

You should be able to explain Stardew Valley's core loop in one sentence, recover from a bad session without rage-reinstalling, and know which mode or map is for learning versus for ego. If you are still lost, re-read the first-session steps instead of hopping to a random viral build.
