BG3 Beginner Guide

A first-week plan for Baldur's Gate 3: how the loop works, what to do in session one, and the mistakes that waste the most time.

What BG3 actually is

Baldur's Gate 3 is a D&D 5e CRPG. Exploration, conversation, and turn-based combat all scale with how well you read the room — and the environment. The loop you will repeat: Explore a region, talk or fight, long rest when spell slots are gone, then push the act's map until the story gates you.

Your first session

Play on Explorer or Balanced until you understand advantage, concentration, and surprise. Talk to everyone in your camp. Companions are quests, not just DPS. Use shove, jump, and high ground. The environment is a class feature. Long rest often enough to not hoard every spell 'for later'. Later is a TPK with full slots.

Mistakes that end runs

Splitting the party across three loading zones. Turn-based still needs your other characters. Ignoring camp supplies then starving in Act 2. Pack food. Min-maxing a character you hate playing. A fun Bard will finish the game; a miserable optimized Monk might not. Stealing in front of NPCs then wondering why the whole town is red.

What 'good' looks like after a week

You should be able to explain Baldur's Gate 3's core loop in one sentence, recover from a bad session without rage-reinstalling, and know which mode or map is for learning versus for ego. If you are still lost, re-read the first-session steps instead of hopping to a random viral build.
