GTA V Beginner Guide

A first-week plan for Grand Theft Auto V: how the loop works, what to do in session one, and the mistakes that waste the most time.

What GTA V actually is

GTA V is Rockstar's Los Santos sandbox. The campaign is a complete crime movie; GTA Online is a separate live-service grind with businesses, heists, and a lot of flying motorcycles. The loop you will repeat: Story: swap protagonists, pull jobs, explore. Online: register as a CEO/MC, run a money loop, then spend it on something that gets blown up.

Your first session

Play Story Mode first if you care about characters. Online will not pause for plot. On Steam you may see Legacy and Enhanced clients. Install the one your friends use. In Online, do the tutorial businesses that pay without needing a full lobby of griefers — or find a quiet session. Save often in Story. The game autosaves, but missions can be long.

Mistakes that end runs

Buying shark cards before you understand a single passive business. The shop is not a guide. Calling a public lobby a 'safe grinding space'. It is content for people with oppressor missiles. Skipping flight school then wondering why you cannot land a plane. Treating every NPC as a wanted-level experiment in the first hour of Story.

What 'good' looks like after a week

You should be able to explain Grand Theft Auto V's core loop in one sentence, recover from a bad session without rage-reinstalling, and know which mode or map is for learning versus for ego. If you are still lost, re-read the first-session steps instead of hopping to a random viral build.
