Project Zomboid Beginner Guide
Rosewood or Riverside, sandbox sliders, and why the frying pan is not a personality.
What you are actually playing
Project Zomboid is a top-down zombie survival sim where overconfidence is the real infection. Loot, carpentry, and moodles matter, but noise and line of sight are what end runs. The loading screen is honest. You win by dying later: a sheeted house, a quiet loot path, and never a crowd with a frying pan.
The first week
Pick a custom sandbox if Apocalypse feels unfair. Population and transmission settings are the difficulty slider. Riverside or Rosewood are kinder first towns than downtown Louisville. Never fight a crowd with a frying pan. Walk away, close doors, and use fences to split hordes.
Occupation
Fire officer, police, or carpenter are honest. Burglar is strong if you like stealth and hotwiring. The occupation is a head start, not a build that ignores sound.
Books
Read skill books before grinding. XP multipliers are the real early-game power spike. A library after a quiet clear beats sawing chairs in the street.
What good looks like after a week
A two-story with sheets and a rope, a bag you can walk with, a melee with durability, and you have not shotgunned a lawn. Then Muldraugh warehouses. Then a car.
